There is a lot of competition in landing a Product Management job. It may seem impossible to land it, comparing yourself to the competition, because you may be trying to get this job transitioning from another field. Coming from a different background, you may not think that you have the relevant skills to become a successful Product Manager. In this case, you may have the idea of joining a course in Product Management. Through a Google search, you may have found General Assembly’s Product Management course. But are they offering everything that you need in order to triumph as a Product Manager or landing that Product Management job?
Let’s look at what differentiates Product Gym from General Assembly and how to decide which one is the better choice for you.
The Key Difference
The key difference between General Assembly and Product Gym is that Product Gym’s coaches work with each individual. Although we have classes that large groups can attend, we work with each student individually in career coaching. We are aware that not everyone has the same skillsets or prior experience. We understand that getting the Product Management job does not happen overnight. It will take time. In order to offer students as much help as possible, we help you start applying right away and offer access to our classes for up to a year after you finish your classes with us.

While General Assembly may also offer you career coaching, the method of support we offer is different. To begin with, we will help you every step of the way with a personalized game plan for your individual needs. Like previously stated, every person has a different skill set and background, so we understand that there should not be a cookie-cutter method of assisting each person through this process.
When you join with us, you will be given the chance to work with our career coaches. At Product Gym, our career coaches have former technical recruiting backgrounds. They understand the process behind the scenes of hiring a Product Manager, and will use this knowledge to help you find success in landing a Product Manager job.
However, sometimes your needs may not be completely met by the person you would have met on the other side of an interview table. In this case, you can use our alumni network and communicate with others who have recently been on your side of the job process.
To further assist you in this process, we will introduce you to an approved list of technical recruiting vendors and offer on-campus recruiting services. Our students also have access to our web-based resources, which include:
- Comprehensive Practical Information
- Online Guides
- Digital Flashcards
- Relevant Links

Our process employs a scalable application methodology. Rather than focusing a lot of energy in one or two applications, we believe that you should be applying to as many jobs as possible. If you are only putting out one or two applications, you are just reducing the chances of hearing back. Instead, we will help you revamp your resume, LinkedIn, cover letter, and backstory in order to apply to as many jobs as possible in order to increase the number of callbacks you will receive.
Without prior experience in Product Management, we understand that it may be a daunting task of making a resume for the Product Management role. We will help brand and optimize your resume to pass through resume bots for job applications. Furthermore, we will design your resume so that it is appropriate for applying to most, if not all, of your jobs. Along with your resume, we will help you construct a cover letter and tailor a backstory/pitch to sell your strengths. Within 7 to 10 days of joining with us, we will have those all prepared for you.
However, not all jobs will be found through applying from job boards or company websites. Many Product Managers job openings, as much as 80% of them, are not found on any job board or company websites. In order to obtain these jobs, you need to be able to sell yourself to recruiters on LinkedIn. In order to help you with this part of the process, we will optimize your LinkedIn so that you can filter out recruitment to other positions, such as marketing or banking, and receive more messages for Product Management roles.

Great, you made it past the application process. But the hiring process does not end there. For the Product Management job process, you have to expect multiple rounds of interviews. Unlike General Assembly, which begins interviewing at the end of its class, you will start interview strategies and interviewing within 21 days.
With our compilation of over 3,000 Product Management questions and digital interview flashcards, we will prepare you for any question the interviewer has for you. But besides the typical interview questions, we also teach you how to think and solve case study questions. This is something that is critical to succeeding in the interview process for many applications but is not taught at General Assembly.

From the previous topics, you can see that our course puts emphasis on and importance of teaching you the skills in securing more interviews and answering interview questions. These are important skills to learn specifically for the Product Management role, especially for students who are transitioning into Product Management from a different field. However, General Assembly only briefly touches upon this in the last week of its course. There are two big problems with this. The first is the lack of emphasis on such important skills. What is the point of learning what a Product Manager does when you’re not learning how to obtain the job? The second problem is that they do not help you when you are actively interviewing. You will not be given interview times right away, which most likely means that you will begin interviewing after your class with General Assembly has ended already. This leaves you with all this information but no help with interviews from the General Assembly instructors after your class ends.
While application and interview support is a huge part of our course, we teach our students how to think and take on the role of a Product Manager. The difference between us and General Assembly is the way we have instructors teach the class. Both of Product Manager and General Assembly utilize one head instructor per class; however, the difference comes from our subject matter experts. We use 2.5-hour classes on specific subjects in which the head instructor will co-teach the class with a professional in that subject. Our experts include:
- Technical and Software Engineering Leads
- Product Designers
- UX Designers/Researchers
- Data Scientists
- Product Marketing Managers
- Product Strategists.
Throughout the course, you will have multiple workshops with different areas of focus: technical engineering, product design, data analytics, product marketing, product strategy, and culture fit and behavior. Having this variety of knowledge is important for the success of any Product Manager. As a Product Manager, you need to be able to communicate with different members of your team. In order to do so, we believe that it is crucial for you to have some background information in all the aspects of creating a product.
The other difference between us and General Assembly and us is the duration of our courses. Product Gym’s course is 6 weeks, while General Assembly’s is 10 weeks long. Your time is important, so we will cover all the information you need in those 6 weeks.
We also understand that your hiring process may not be finished within the 6 weeks that you are with us; therefore, we allow all students that enrolled to stay with us for up to a year. If you feel that you did not fully understand certain subjects of our course, you may retake any of the classes again in the year timespan.
Another important difference is you may enroll with us at any time and start taking classes as soon as you join. On the other hand, General Assembly has scheduled weeks in which their course takes place. With them, if your schedule does not fit with theirs, then you are vulnerable to losing out on some of their classes. This will not be a problem with us.

This article was written by the Product Gym team. The fun fact about this article is that this program was built by our Founder, Richard Chen, after his experience as the Campus Director for Product School’s New York Campus. It was not created to compete, but rather, to serve the needs of a more specific target audience. Product Gym’s objective is to “make sure you learn in a very practical way how to land a Product Manager job.”
